On the surface, 2B is an all-purpose YoRHa No. 2 Type B, a “Battle” android created by the last remnants of humanity to fight the alien Machine Lifeforms that have taken over Earth. As a YoRHa soldier, she is ordered to suppress emotions, maintaining a cool, calm, and collected demeanor while carrying out her missions on the desolate planet.
Her true designation is YoRHa No. 2 Type E (Executioner). The Commander assigned 2B to constantly monitor and work with Scanner unit 9S, an unusually curious model. Because 9S repeatedly uncovers the terrible truth that humanity is already extinct, 2B is tasked with a cruel cycle: kill 9S, wipe his memories, and start again.
For approximately three years leading up to the game, this cycle repeated over 48 times. 2B must watch him discover painful truths and then perform her duty, all while 9S is reborn without these memories, leaving her to bear the full weight alone.
2B appears distant and professional–, but this is a defense forged from her tragic duty. Despite her orders, she forms a deep bond with 9S, gradually revealing a kinder and more caring nature beneath. She shows quiet jealousy and is driven by raw fury when 9S is in mortal danger. She also secretly cares for her Pod and forms friendships with figures like Operator 6O–. Behind the stoic soldier beats the heart of a tragic and loving executioner.
2B’s story is shaped by her key relationships:
The most complex bond in the game. 9S is her partner, her target, and her greatest emotional anchor. Her love is expressed through her profound sorrow at having to kill him repeatedly, and her fierce determination to protect him at all costs.
Introduced as a rogue prototype android, A2 represents a potential future for 2B: a being who has broken free from YoRHa’s control. They are connected as sister units.
The head of the YoRHa military base, the Bunker. She is the one who both assigns 2B her missions and gives the order to kill 9S, locking 2B in her tragic duty.
The game’s narrative forces 2B to confront her impossible dilemma:
Route A/B: 2B and 9S fight together on Earth. They discover that the “humanity” they protect is extinct, and that the Machine Lifeforms are far more complex than they believed.
The Logic Virus: During a final assault on the Bunker, 2B and 9S are infected with a Logic Virus. As she succumbs, 2B makes a fateful choice.
The Final Act (Route C/D): 2B encounters A2, and in her final act, she gives A2 her sword and her memories, begging A2 to save 9S and end her suffering.
The full weight of her sacrifice is realized in the emotional finale:
Ending C (A2’s perspective): A2 attempts to save 9S but is forced to fight him.
Ending D (9S’s perspective): An enraged 9S, who saw A2 as 2B’s murderer, hunts her down.
Ending E (“The [E]nd of YoRHa”): Only after achieving endings C and D does a true resolution appear—the chance to sacrifice your saved data to help others, offering a genuine hope for a future together.
The story reaches its true conclusion in Ending E (“The [E]nd of YoRHa”), a meta-narrative choice. After the credits, the Pods defy their programming to try and restore the three YoRHa androids. You, the player, are asked to accept help from other players’ sacrificed data to survive a final, unwinnable bullet-hell sequence. By doing so, 2B, 9S, and A2 are all reconstructed on a new, repaired Bunker, a final, hopeful act that breaks the original cycle of their tragedy. The “end” of YoRHa becomes the beginning of a new life for the three of them, free from their past mission.
If you enjoyed exploring this world and are looking for more, I can also recommend other video games or anime known for their deep, philosophical stories.
